Brett always had a smile.

The house is just so empty

Brett and Abby were two people who just loved life. It was full-on 100% of the time – they loved every little bit of every day. Just going fishing, walking and going to the dam. Even if Abby didn’t want to go fishing she’d go because Brett loved it – and she loved Brett.

My amazing boy Brett and his beautiful girlfriend Abby, who was like a daughter to me, died together in a crash on the 5th of January, 2008.

Brett was only just starting to have plans. Two weeks after the crash, his certificate qualifications for building came through. It had only been in the last month that he’d started thinking about his future – started to save some money. Mainly because of Abby. He’d paid his loan off the day before the crash. He’d decided that he wanted to settle down (or as much as he could) because he realised how much he wanted Abby as part of his life.

It gives you a different perspective on life – you realise that the stressful ‘I’ve got to do this, I've got to get this done'’, that attitude, is so wrong. Brett lived in the moment – but he lived his life. The little things were important. Things we’d look over, Brett could see they mattered. It makes you think that maybe this is why he was with us. To teach us to live each day.
The thing I’ll miss the most is Brett’s cuddles – that weren’t cuddles. They’d be a pat on the head or the shoulder – that was him being affectionate. Sometimes he'd pick me up, throw me over his shoulder and throw me onto the lounge. They're  the kind of things I’ll miss. The house is just so empty now.

It’s like a life sentence. Sure you have to get on with it but its not a full life anymore.
