I was just a teenager
My birthday is 1 May. I had just turned 14. My family were in Sydney on holidays. Friday night May 11 my brother who was in the navy called to see us in the caravan park where we were staying. I wanted to take a photo of my baby brother on my older brother's motor bike - I didn't. Instead he left to go back to his base – he never made it. Many years later I learned that he was riding his motor bike on Parramatta Road beside a truck when the truck started to brake. Some brainless idiot decided to enter the highway from the right and caused the semi to brake – my brother knew he had to take action to stop but didn't stand a chance – he ended up in hospital, the errant driver got out alive and without a scratch. He lives to this day without any loss of licence.
He caused the death of my brother in his prime and lives to this day – does he feel remorse for his actions on that fateful day – May 13 1983. The most poignant words spoken on that day – my aunty (my father's sister) said that at least he didn't suffer brain damage. Is that more comforting than no longer having a son and brother?
