Narrator
Welcome to the 1st leg of your Road Trip.
Now you’ve turned 16 you can apply for your learner licence.
So what do you actually need to do?
First, blow out the candles.
That’s a fire hazard mate.
Then, if you haven’t already, read Your keys to driving in Queensland. You can download the most up-to-date version in the Glovebox or buy one at your local newsagent.
Next, you’ll come face-to-face with the incredible F3000.
Which is actually just the number of the Driver Licence Application form you can download and fill in at home.
Then get your ID documents together.
Take your completed form, some money and all your ID to your nearest driver licence issuing centre.
You don’t want to turn up with the wrong ID and have to come back. So see the Evidence of Identity fact sheet in the Glovebox.
Then you have to declare yourself medically fit.
Finally, there’s a written road rules test. But we really want you to pass so there’s a practice road rules test online to help you.
Once you pay for the test and pass it, you’ve earned your learner licence.
Pay for your learners and then you’re ready to hit the road with your supervisor.
Congratulations!
More information is available on this website.
Getting your learner licence is one of the biggest days of your life. Congratulations. Driving is fun and the freedom is amazing. But as you know, driving can be dangerous. Particularly for young drivers.
It’s important that we can keep in touch with you on your Road Trip so be sure to let us know if you change address.
There is more information in the L-plates pit stop tasks.
Why young drivers are at risk
You have to record 100 supervised driving hours in your logbook because you’re inexperienced. Accumulating 100 hours is a great way to gain valuable, potentially life saving experience. Young drivers aged 17-24 are almost 50% more likely to be in a fatal crash than other motorists. The main reasons for this are you –
- haven’t developed your visual scanning and perception skills
- are less likely to identify and respond to risks or hazards
- can be overconfident
- are more easily distracted
- may drive at high risk times (for example, at night and with other young people in the car)
- may sometimes use alcohol or drugs
- may sometimes deliberately take risks (for example, speeding).
Are you over 25?
You still need to hold your learner licence for 12 months before you take the Q-SAFE practical driving test. The 100 supervised driving hours is not mandatory, but highly encouraged.
