Experienced drivers wanted

A photo of young driver being instructed. If you’re an experienced driver in charge of teaching a new driver, you might like to sign up for a refresher course with a professional driving teacher. That could be fun, and something you can both do together. Alternatively, talk to your learner driver’s driving instructor to learn how you can lend a hand with the skills that your learner driver needs extra practice and attention with.

Important: Make sure your learner driver completes the required 100 hours of supervised on-road driving experience and always record the start and finish time of each driving session in their log book.

Tips to remember when teaching learner drivers

  1. If possible, employ an accredited driving instructor to teach the basic skills.
  2. Get involved. Talk to the instructor. Maybe you can help with extra practice and assistance where it’s most needed.
  3. Provide lots of opportunities for your learner driver to practise driving in different conditions and circumstances such as wet weather, at night, peak hour traffic, freeway, and so on.
  4. Keep your blood alcohol level at zero when driving with your learner driver to ensure you remain alert and attentive at all times.
  5. Aim to make sure your learner driver maintains a safe following distance of at least two seconds.
  6. Make sure that their attention to driving is not distracted by radio, CD or mobile phone.
  7. Be an active teacher and always demonstrate ‘best driving practice’ yourself.
  8. Continue to observe your learner driver’s road behaviour when they gain their P1 or P2 licence. If you notice any habits that put lives at risk, talk to them about it.

The graduated licensing system for P1 and P2 licence holders has specific restrictions that your child needs to follow to help them stay safe when driving or riding. More information on the graduated licensing system is available on this website:
