Cycle safe kids
Cycle with your kids
Cycling with a child can help them develop road sense that will stand by them for life.
It can also help them identify hazards in your local area and together you can plan to either avoid them or work out how to pass them safely.
Six grown-up tips
- Children under 10 years old should ride on the footpath, not the road. They’re too young to have the concentration, skills and experience to cope with traffic.
- Teach your child to ride in single file and to never ‘double’ with other children.
- A child’s bicycle should have a flag and red reflector on the back and a white reflector on the front.
- Children should wear brightly coloured shoes and clothing to make them more noticeable to motorists.
- Equip your child with a properly-fitted nationally accredited helmet to be worn at all times when riding. By the way, that’s a legal requirement under Queensland law.
- The best way for a child to become cycle-safe is to ride on the road under adult supervision. Adult supervision is essential until a child can demonstrate good bicycle control, behave safely when riding, and show an understanding of the road rules.
Teach your child to be cycle safely. Show them you want them to be Here for Life.
