Be safe on two wheels
Safe cycling for life
Cycling is great exercise, a good community activity, and when used as an alternative form of transport, it makes for more liveable cities by reducing carbon emissions.
Cyclists are legitimate road users. They share the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicle drivers and must respect all the road rules in general. There are also specific rules that apply only to bicycles and cyclists. Check them out here:

Tips for cycle safety
- Be predictable.
- Signal your intentions.
- Be assertive but not aggressive or foolish.
- Be aware.
- Expect the unexpected.
- Ride carefully.
- Wear an Australian Standards Approved helmet, correctly fitted and fastened.
- Have at least one effective brake.
- Have a bell, horn or similar warning device.
Tips for night cycle safety
Ensure you have:
- A front light – a flashing or steady white light visible up to 200 metres (m).
- A rear light – a flashing or steady red light visible up to 200 m.
- A rear reflector made visible up to 50 m by a vehicle’s headlights.
On Queensland roads it is legal for two cyclists to ride side-by-side, but don't hog the road.
Cyclists riding abreast should not have more than 1.5 m between their bikes and should give way when a car is turning left in front of them.
In Queensland, cyclists of any age are allowed to ride on a footpath unless prohibited by a bicycle prohibition sign.
When riding on a footpath, cyclists must give way to pedestrians and ride in a manner which does not endanger other footpath users.
