Walking safe for life

Photo of people walkingTaking a regular walk is great for health and fitness. But you need to walk with care, not just when you’re crossing roads, but every time you share the road with motorists, motorcyclists, cyclists and other pedestrians.

Tips for safe walking

  1. Walk on footpaths when you can. They are the safest place both day and night.
  2. Walk on the side of the road that faces oncoming traffic. It’s the best place to be to see what’s heading your way.
  3. Never cross a road without first scanning for oncoming traffic.
  4. When possible, use designated crossings: pedestrian crossings, traffic signals or pedestrian refuges.
  5. When no marked crossing is available, don’t cross where you can’t see approaching traffic. The crest of a hill or a bend in the road is a real danger zone.
  6. Cross only where you feel safe to cross.
  7. Try to make sure drivers see you before you cross the road. Make eye contact if possible.
  8. Never assume a driver has seen you.
  9. Be extra cautious at night when visibility on roads and shared paths can be poor. Wear a reflective wristband, shoes, jacket or backpack with a reflective strip. At a minimum, wear light-coloured clothing and carry something white.
  10. Try to walk with another person and where people can see you. If you walk alone, carry a mobile phone or even a whistle to blow if you find yourself in a worrying situation.
  11. Drink walking and drug walking can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Your judgement, reflexes and coordination will be unreliable. You’ll be safer if you keep to the footpath and cross roads only at designated crossings. You’ll also be safer in a group with at least one sober person. Maybe you should plan alternative transport such as a bus or taxi.

Walk safely. Be here. Here for Life.
