Keeping your vehicle safe

Safe vehicles are just as important as safe driving.

Regular check-ups and a little extra preparation before venturing out could be what keeps you, your family or friends Here for Life.

A regular service is essential. Regular checks should also be made on tyre tread, tyre pressure, oil level, battery condition, lights and windscreen wipers to ensure all are in working order.

You should also know how to change a tyre, change the oil and monitor the tyres yourself.

Tyres

Did you know that tyres must have at least 1.5 millimetres of tread and this depth must be consistent around the width and circumference of the tyre? If the tread or sidewall rubber is damaged or if the tyres have cuts, bulges or exposed or damaged cords, they could easily blow and need replacing.

Packing

If you’re packing a lot into the car, put the heaviest items in the boot. Should you need to brake suddenly, loose items in the driver/passenger space can become dangerous projectiles.

Towing

Towing a caravan, trailer or boat will affect your vehicle's handling, manoeuvrability, acceleration and braking. Towing also increases fuel consumption.  Allow for the extra length and width of a trailer or load when entering traffic and leave a longer than usual stopping distance between your vehicle and the one ahead.
